Update from the Library Director

Greetings,

I wanted to let everyone know that we will be upgrading our Online Catalog system on Wednesday, May 18 first thing in the morning. During this upgrade, the following will be unavailable:
  • Our online catalog
  • Placing holds or Melcat requests in person or via the library website
  • Paying fines or fees
  • Using the Self Checkout stations
  • OverDrive, Hoopla and any of our electronic services that require authentication for your library card
You will still be able to check out materials at the front desk of the library, but you will need to have your SDL library card with you.

Once the upgrade is completed, staff will let users in the building know and the library website will be updated. We appreciate your patience as we move to this newer more powerful version of our online catalog system!

See you at the library,

Karrie Waarala
Library Director

LIBRARY CLOSED
The library will be closed Saturday, May 28 through Monday, May 30 for the Memorial Day weekend.

GET TO KNOW SDL

Meet Melissa Schabel!

Position: Adult Services Librarian

Favorite Author/Book: One of my many favorite authors is Barbara Kingsolver. However, my favorite book changes frequently! I recently read Bewilderment by Richard Powers, and the story stayed on my mind for days after finishing it.

Favorite thing about SDL: The SDL community has been very welcoming and friendly. I love that new books I want to read often have waiting lists, because that means Saline is a community of readers.

Meet the Home Improvement Resource Center!
It's Spring! Which means it's time for some DIY projects around the house. Check out the Home Improvement Resource Center, an online resource provided by Michigan eLibrary (MeL). You'll find articles & step-by-step instructions for a variety of do-it-yourself home repair, maintenance, and gardening projects to refresh your home.

ON DISPLAY

MEREDITH BIXBY COLLECTION

In 1997, noted puppeteer Meredith Bixby gave his entire collection to the City of Saline in Trust. The collection consists of much more than just Bixby’s nearly 100 hand-crafted marionettes from his seven traveling shows; it includes set pieces, hand-painted backdrops, Bixby’s traveling stage, promotional materials, correspondence from children who saw his shows, and much, much more. In 1998, Bixby worked alongside members of the City of Saline to create the Meredith Bixby Marionette Museum right on Michigan Avenue. In 2008, when the economy was struggling, the City had to close the museum, and the collection was moved into storage in the basement of Saline City Hall, where it still is today. You can see several of his works on display at SDL this month and visit the Bixby Trust digital archive online.

SDL SEED LIBRARY &
GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS SERIES

The SDL Seed Library is now open! Visit the Seed Library in the Local History Room and help yourself to sample packets of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds to grow at home. (Limit of 5 packets per person, please.) This great new community resource is funded by a grant from the Carl F. Schrandt Endowment Fund, so we'll have lots of seeds to get it started this season. Later this year, community members will be welcome to use their new knowledge about seed saving to donate seeds back to the SDL Seed Library for next year.

GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS

Tuesdays, 7-8 pm

Do you want to grow your own plants, but don’t know where to start?
Royer Held, President of Project Grow in Ann Arbor, will show you how to start and maintain your home garden in Michigan’s unique climate. This three-part series will teach you the basics of growing your own garden, how to save seeds, how to adapt to a changing climate, and more.
